Activities

Exercise Classes

Exercise increases your energy, strength, and sense of well-being. Seniors of all ages and ability levels are welcome at our exercise classes. A strength and balance class is offered at 11:00 AM on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Village Auditorium. Hand weights and exercise bands are provided, though you are welcome to bring your own. On Monday mornings at 10:00 AM, a free combined Nia/Pilates class will be offered in the Gymnasium: Pilates at 10:00 AM, and Nia at 10:30. You're welcome to attend either, or both. A beginning/intermediate Tai Chi class will be offered beginning on Wednesday, May 7th, at 10:00 AM in the Village Auditorium. There is a fee of $20.00 for the 8-week course. A twice-weekly older adult aerobics class will be held in the Village Gym at 9:00 AM on Tuesdays and Thursdays through the courtesy of the YMCA; and  our yoga class will be held on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 AM. There is a participation fee for the aerobics, Tai Chi,  and yoga classes; however, the strength and balance, Nia, and Pilates classes are free! The yoga, aerobics, and Nia/Pilates classes are suspended for the summer, while the strength and balance and Tai Chi classes meet year-round.

Bridge Groups

An open party bridge group meets on Mondays at the Senior Centre, beginning at 10:00 AM. Reservations are not necessary, but are encouraged. A duplicate bridge group meets on Wednesdays at 10:00 AM; partners and reservations are required. For more information, please contact the Senior Centre office.

Out to Lunch Bunch

We visit a local restaurant one Friday each month. Carpooling from the Centre is available, and reservations are required. See our calendar for this month's destination.

Monthly Birthday Bashes

You're welcome to celebrate with us whether it's your birthday month or not! One Tuesday each month we mark our members' birthdays with a wine and cheese reception at 11:30 AM, and an especially nice lunch at noon. See our monthly calendar and menu for details. Advance reservations are required; the cost is $4.00.

Red Hat Society

The Manlius Senior Centre has its own chapter of the Red Hat Society, the Red Swans. Membership is open to all women over age 50 who want to have fun (and who don't object to celebrating their wisdom and experience  by wearing a red hat). Their activities usually include one meeting and one outing or activity each month (see our calendar for details).

Speakers

Speakers on a wide variety of subjects, from history to health to hobbies to senior services, visit the Centre several times each month (see our calendar for this month's speakers).

Crafts Group

Our weekly crafts group meets each Wednesday in the Dining Room at 1:00 PM. Participants bring their own crafts and enjoy an afternoon of conversation and companionship. Newcomers welcome!

Workshops: Painting and Memoir Writing

Exercise your talents at these informal workshop groups. Our painting workshop, also known as our "painters' support group," meets each Friday at 1:00 PM in the Dining Room. Artists bring their own materials to the group, and share input and encouragement with other painters.  Our memoir writing workshop meets on occasional Fridays. Participants are welcome to write about an incident or character from their lives and present it to the group for suggestions and support. For more information about either group, please contact the Centre.

Monthly Movies

Enjoy a newly released or great classic movie once each month at the Senior Centre at no charge. Check our calendar for names of the films and the exact dates.

Bingo, Bunko, Mah Jongg, Scrabble, and More

These groups meet regularly and are open to all, with newcomers especially welcome. Bingo is usually played at 12:45 PM on the first or second Thursday of each month. Prizes are awarded, and there is a fee of $1.00 to play. Bunko is usually played at 12:45 PM on the fourth Thursday of each month, though the date may vary. No previous experience is necessary to enjoy this dice game, but advance reservations are required. The cost to play is $3.00 per person, and prizes are awarded. If you're a Scrabble enthusiast, join us some Monday at 12:45 PM for an afternoon of fun (please phone the office at 682-7889 to be certain there is a game that day). Our card group meets on Thursday mornings at 9:30 AM for a friendly game of hand-and-foot. Our mah jongg group meets on occasional Tuesday afternoons, on dates determined by the group; please contact the office for more information. And don't forget our men's card group that meets for poker on Monday evenings at 7:00 PM from September through May! Groups interested in playing other card or board games are welcome to set up tables when our game room is available (please phone the Centre in advance for assistance). Remember to check our calendar for specific dates and times.
