"Informed and Shared Discussions" Begin Wednesday, April 7th

The Senior Centre is delighted to announce this unique opportunity for seniors to enjoy the expertise of local leaders in a wide-ranging variety of fields. Program director Lewis Kuppermann has invited speakers on contemporary issues of compelling interest to join us for “Informed and Shared Discussions” at the Senior Centre. The program, open to the public, will be held at 10 AM on Wednesday mornings in the Manlius Library Community Room, beginning April 7th. Guest speakers in April include: Suzanne Lysak, Assistant Professor of Broadcast and Digital Journalism at Syracuse University, who leads off the program on April 7th with a discussion on today’s changing journalism; SU psychologist Jacqueline Mogle on April 14th, whose field is cognitive issues in aging; and SU Associate Director for Sustainability Steve Lloyd on April 28th, who will discuss the ever-increasing need for protecting our environment in today’s challenging world. Future speakers will include Marilyn Pinsky, former Commissioner of the county Department of Aging; patient advocate and health care speaker Trisha Terry; and honored SU professor Kendall Phillips, who also hosts WCNY’s “Classic Movie Night.” We look forward to welcoming you to this fascinating program! Find detailed information at the program’s website, mscinformed.wordpress.com.

Handy Helpers Program Assists Seniors with Chores and Errands

If you're like many seniors, you've started to find certain chores and errands more challenging. Would life be easier if you could call on someone to help get your screen doors in, put your patio furniture away each fall, or even just change your smoke detector batteries or ceiling light bulbs? Perhaps you don't drive any longer and need assistance getting to the hairdresser or pharmacy. If you are a senior who lives in the 13104 zip code, the Senior Centre's new Handy Helpers program can make these tasks more manageable. The Handy Helpers will connect seniors with screened, reliable volunteers who can help with local errands and small but essential chores, such as weeding a small garden or cleaning out a spare room. This service is provided without charge. For more information, please phone the Senior Centre office at 682-7889.

Honoring Our Veterans

The Senior Centre honored its veterans at a special ceremony in November. Veterans representing all branches of the service, from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and peacetime, were present. Pictured above are, front row, from left: Charles B.
